Under general supervision of the Director of Public Grants and requiring independent judgment; the Public Grants Officer will work with the Director to manage and grow a strong public grants program. This new position on the Development Team will play an important role in helping to build Sheppard Pratt’s public grants program as we work to reach our goal in a major fundraising campaign, The Campaign to Transform Mental Care. 

Position requires the fundraising professional to have excellent writing and editing skills; strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; and a commitment to working in a team environment. A passion for the Sheppard Pratt mission is essential.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties:
1.    Write proposals, letters of inquiry and post-grant reports.
2.    Represent Sheppard Pratt to public funding sources.
3.    Conduct prospect research to identify prospective funders, specifically public funding opportunities.
4.    Maintain tracking chart that includes deadlines, reporting requirements, and next steps for all grant funders.
5.    Work with Director to build a grants management framework across the organization. 
6.    Work with staff across the organization on preparing annual outcomes, budgets, and proposal templates.
7.    Coordinate site visits, including the preparation of materials and follow up correspondence.
8.    Research and analyze trends of similar organizations.
9.    Prepare monthly reports, board reports, and develop other internal communication vehicles as needed.
10.    Performs all other direct, job related duties as required.


1.    Work requires professional level of knowledge of accounting, financial principles and theory, and effective verbal and written communication skills acquired through a bachelor’s degree.  Bachelor’s in accounting or business administration preferred. Plus A minimum of (2) years grant writing experience preferred.
2.    Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide high levels of customer service.
3.    Must be able to work independently.
4.    Highly detailed oriented.
5.    Must be able to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
6.    Strong commitment to the mission.
7.    Proficiency in Microsoft Word products including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and online public grant resources.
8.    Must possess high levels of computer expertise with the ability to quickly learn new programs, applications and software and demonstrate high levels of competence.
9.    High levels of confidentially with constituent information and financial records.
10.    Writing sample required.

3.    Requires personal vehicle for travel as needed.
