The Assistant Director of Development (for induvial gifts) reports to the Chief Advancement Officer and is responsible for an annual contributed revenue goal for individuals through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.  This includes identifying new donors, continually cultivating existing donors, and overseeing staff with individual giving responsibilities.  The Assistant Director of Development shares responsibility for the achievement of overall departmental goals and is an integral member of the fundraising team with an emphasis on direct donor contact and relationship building.


  • Solicit and secure $2,500 to $250,000 and above gifts for unrestricted and restricted purposes.
  • Manage a portfolio of 80 or more individual major gift prospects through all phases of the donor relationship cycle, including at least 15 significant monthly contacts and at least 15 annual solicitations at five- and six-figures and above.
  • Create and implement strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, and acquire new donors.
  • Renew and upgrade individual annual donors.
  • Initiate contact and secure face-to-face cultivation and solicitation meetings with donors and prospects.
  • Continuously manage and update donor activity in the Tessitura donor database.
  • Oversee all individual giving portfolios for staff at The Atlanta Opera with major gift responsibilities, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Draft and deliver donor proposals, solicitations, and correspondence.
  • Provide a reasonable and timely schedule for pledges and payments for assigned donors and consistent updates to donor records and the Tessitura database.
  • Work with the Chief of Advancement to increase the return on investment of broad-based annual giving and corporate solicitation efforts.
  • Lead the development of the individual giving skills and abilities of members of the staff with those responsibilities.
  • Assure that individual giving policies and procedures are developed, maintained, and adhered to.
  • Project management as assigned.

  • A proven track record of measurable success in securing gifts of five- and six-figures or more from individuals and corporations.
  • Extensive knowledge of individual and major gift fundraising strategies and tactics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; polished presentation skills.
  • Skills in relationship building, communications, prioritizing, negotiation and influencing, self-motivation, and possess temperament to work with all organizational levels.
  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills, ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of discretion and integrity.
  • A passion for and commitment to opera or other performing arts.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 2-5 or more years of direct major gift cultivation and solicitation experience with demonstrated success in achieving and exceeding organizational goals.
  • Experience with relational databases, such as Tessitura or Raiser’s Edge, preferred.
  • Proficiency in and/or focused interest in Opera, the Vocal and Classical Arts, preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for up to and over eight hours per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner.
