Vice President of Development

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The Vice President of Development is responsible to develop and maintain a comprehensive private and public sector fundraising program, and to develop and implement strategic plans for fundraising events, grant writing, and donor relations.  The position develops new and existing markets in support of the mission and vision of the San Antonio Zoo.  The Vice President of Development will be part of the senior leadership team and actively participates in organization-wide policy decisions, strategic planning, Board relations, and works to establish San Antonio Zoo as one of the premier attractions and event destinations in the city of San Antonio and South Texas.

As a Vice President of Development, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Designs and implements a comprehensive fundraising program in support of the zoo’s economic resources development goals.
  • Develops and implements operating budgets for development and annual fundraising events.
  • Analyzes and controls marketing expenditures to ensure compliance with department budgets.
  • Manages Planned Giving Officer and Senior Directors of Development
  • Ensures that fundraising opportunities and zoo activities are effectively communicated to philanthropic supporters.
  • Collaborates with events personnel to develop and plan innovative event ideas to support fundraising goals.
  • Assist in Master Plan Capital Campaigns with Chief Development Officer.
  • Assist in implementing metrics for all front line fundraisers.
  • Effectively trains, coaches, and supports Development and Events staff as necessary, and complete performance reviews in a timely manner.
  • Actively participates in Board meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Engages in other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of San Antonio Zoo.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as necessary to assure achievement of established objectives.

Secondary Functions

  • Assure all tax substantiation correspondence is sent to donors.
  • Maintain accurate records and history of giving for donors and potential donors.
  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:

  • Ability to work occasional weekends, holidays and after-hour assignments.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
  • Understand the philosophy of philanthropy and be able to relate it to others.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum ten years management-level marketing and/or development experience preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required as well as Raiser’s Edge NXT.
  • Strong planning, analytical and decision-making skills are required, with the ability to work in a dynamic, evolving organization.
  • Demonstrates motivational and problem-solving acumen with a high degree of integrity and ethics.
  • Possesses the ability to articulate and inspire support for a vision of the future.
